The National Institutes of Health (NIH) of the University of the Philippines Manila will celebrate its 14th year of founding on 13 February 2012. It will also mark the 10th University Science and Technology Week and the 3rd anniversary of the Metro Manila Health Research & Development Consortium (MMHRDC) on the same date.
Republic Act No. 8503, otherwise known as “An act providing for the promotion of health research and development, establishing for the purpose the National Institutes of Health, defining its objectives, powers and functions, and for other purposes,” saw the need to promote science and technology research and development in the field of health.
The vision of NIH is to be a recognized authority in health research and development and the key source of critical health information for national development in the Philippines and Southeast Asia.
The mission of NIH is to be a major resource center for health research and capacity-building using the framework, "Partnerships for Better Health.” Hence, the creation of the University Science and Technology Week early in this century.
As for MMHRDC, it is a network of Metro Manila-based institutions involved in health research. UPM- NIH is the convenor of the MMHRDC, one of the more successful regional health research and development consortia of the Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS).
NIH usually celebrates the triple anniversaries with a much attended scientific conference. For this year, the conference theme will be, “Transformative Research, Call for Action, and Advocacy: AIDS, TB & Malaria.”
The Conference will be held on 22-23 February 2012 at the Hyatt Hotel Manila.
