2020 DOST-PCHRD Undergraduate Thesis Grant in Natutal Products


The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) is opening its call for proposals for its Undergraduate Grant in Natural Products.


This program aims to sustain a research culture in natural products to increase the number of research and later on build a pool of researchers/experts speacializing in the fiels. It supports the Drug Discovery and Development Program of DOST-PCHRD which aims to develop safe, eefctive and affordable alternative drugs from the country's natural resources.


The CALL is OPEN to ALL UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS of Colleges of Pharmacy, Chemistry,Nursing, Health and Allied Sciences who have thesis proposals on natural products in the CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR. All interested individuals are requested to submit the following documennt:

A. Duly accomplished Application Form

B. Duly accomplished prescribed research proposal form with college seal

C. Endorsement Letter signed by the College Dean and head of insitution

D.Soft copy of the proposal in MS Word Format

E. Hard Copy of the proposal using A4 Size paper

F. Certificate of Plan Authentication (if applicable)

G. Applicable Clearances

* Ethics Clearance from PHREB accredited Research Ethics Committee for studies involving human subjects

* Animal Research Permit from the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) for studies involving animals

* Free and Prior Informed Consent from the National Commission on Indigenous People for studies involving Indigenous people

* Gratuitous Permit from the Protected Area and Management Board of DENR for studies involving colelction of samples from protected areas

*Biosafety Clearnce from institutional biosafety committees for studies involving genetic engineering and pathogenic organisms.

G. Curriculum vitae of the students and adviser using the prescribed form


Deadline for submission to the consortium is on MAY 29,2020. A thesis grant amountng to Php 50,000 will be given to two (2) thesis proposals per region. 

After the completion of the study, six (6) finalists will be chosen to present their research druing the Philippine National Health Research Systems (PNHRS) week. Three (3) winners will be awarded. 






The Alberto G. Romualdez, Jr. Outsatnding Health Research Award (AROHRA) encourages researchers to be sensitive to the scientific and technological requirements of the health delivery system and rewards those whose research have contributed significantly to addressing prevalent health issues.
The Award gives recognition to a research program or project that has demonsytrated the link between research and practice through the utilization of research findings in the health delivery system. Given by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) in cillaboration with the Department of Health (DOH), the award has two (2) categories: Biomedical Research and Health Services Research
1. What can be nominated
Any Health research program or project may be considered for the Award. Work to be nominated may fall under any of two categories: Biomedical Resarch or Health Services Research.
For Biomedical Research, the program or project must be engaged in generating and/or adapting appropriate health technologies tahta ddress specific health problems and emphasize the development of diagnostic tools and techniques, biological (e.g. drugs, vaccines, fucntional foods,etc.), biomedical devices and ICT-based healthcare technologies.
For Health Services Research, the progra, or project must be involved in the organization,administration, operation, utilization and other aspects of hralth services delivery systems that address teh country's social, political, cultural and economic conditions.
2. Who can nominate
Any institution, members of the consortium; scientific technological and professional societies or associations; research institutes; universities and colleges; and individuals may nominate. Self nomination is not allowed.
3. Who can be nominated and what can be a nominated entry
The award is open to a completed research program or project done by Filipino researcher/s. The nominated entry must be done mainly in the Philippines.
For purposes of this Award, aresearch program refers to a group of interrelated or complementing research projects that require an interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary approach to meet established goal/s within a specific time frame, while a research project refers to the basic unit in the investigation of specific research problems with pre-determined objective/s to be acomplished within a specific time frame.
4. How to nominate
Nominations should be made using the prescribed nomination form. Entries from both conrostium member institutions and non-consortium member institutiosn must be submitted to and endorsed by the Chair of the consortium. Each nomination should include ALL of the following:
a) Write-up on the impact of the project on health delivery, a contextualization of the problem that the project/program seeks to address and a description of the program/project, highlighting how the results were utilized, as well as the benefits derived from their utilization
b) One copy of each of the technical reports and/or publications of the completed projects leading to technology transfer and/or translation to a policy formulation or program invention
c) Statement from the technology user(s) and program end-user
5. Schedule of Selection and Awarding
The award is given every three (3) years
6. Where to send nominations
a) Nominations should be submitted to the MMHRDC secretariat not later than February 28,2020
b) Endorsed entries by the consortium chair should be submitted to DOST-PCHRD by the 1st week of March 2020.

a.2 Economic benefits (30%)
a.3 S&T benefits (20%)
b) Healtn Services Research
b.1 Extent of impact on health/quality of life (60%)

b.3 S&T benefits (10%)
c) Statement from the technology user(s) and program or project end-user describing the contribution of the technology and project or program in improving health delivery
* After the preliminary screening, the judges may ask for additional supporting documents from the nominees
2. Procedure for Selection
a. There will be two (2) levels of selection: 
Preliminary Screening anf Final Selection
b. Preliminary Screening:
b.1 Nominations for the Award will be considered by a Screening Committee composed of distinguished scientists and technical experts appointed by the DOST-PCHRD. The Sceening Committee can undertake visits or interview nominees or other concerned individuals to validate statements made in the nomination form.
b.2 The Screening Committee recommends the shortlisted candidates to the Board of Judges for its consideration
c. Final Selection
c.1 The Board of judges reviews the work of short-listed candidates and decides on the awardee for each category based on the set criteria
c.2 In the event that no research program or project sufficiently meets the qualifications for either or both categories, the Board of judges has the prerogative not to give the Award. Nominations will be considered for screening in the next awarding year
c.3 The decision of the Board of Judges is final
The Award consists of a cash prize of Php 500,000 (net of tax) and trophy for winners of each category

  1. Students, staff and faculty of current MMHRDC member institutions can submit a maximum of two (2) entries per lead author.
  2. Studies already submitted or presented in other forums are still eligible.
  3. Published papers are not eligible for submission.
  4. Plagiarism is a ground for disqualification

  6. All submissions will be considered either for oral or poster presentation
  7. MMHRDC and the organizer of the symposium will notify receipt of the submitted paper via email.
  8. Preliminary screening will be conducted by the Research Management Committee and members of the Research Competition Committee. Final papers to be presented in the oral or poster presentation will be selected by the MMHRDC.
  9. Paper format should include a separate title page, which indicates the title of the paper, author(s) name(s) and titles (e.g. Dr., Mss, Professor), institutional affiliations, complete mailing address(es), e-mail address(es), telephone number(s) and name of author to whom all correspondence should be addressed. The next page should have the research title, abstract (maximum of 300 words) and a maximum of 6 keywords. Text should be single spaced, 11 fonts size, Arial font type.
  • Papers should include the following sections: Introduction, Review of related literature, Objectives, Methodology, Results/Findings, Discussion, Conclusion and Recommendation
  • Length of paper should be in range of 5,000-6,000 words (excluding references and appendices)
  • Tabled/figures/graphs should be inserted as close as possible to the location where they are cited
  • References should always be numbered consecutively in order in which they are mentioned in the text as per the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) recommendation
  1. The author/s of the studies selected either for oral or poster presentation will be notified via email by MMHRDC and/or members of the Research Competition Committee by April 12,2020
  2. The author/s needs to confirm their attendance to the symposium. If the author fails to respond, they will be informed of the forfeiture of the invitation, and the slot will be given to waitlisted authors.
  3. For papers selected for oral presentation, a copy of the presentation must be submitted to the organizers one (1) week before the event.
  4. For papers selected for poster presentations, the guidelines for poster presentation will be given via email by the MMHRDC staff or by the Research Competition Committee member.
  5. Travel and per diem expenses as well as accommodation shall be charged to sending institutions or the author. Event Registration fee for both the oral research presentation and research poster competition will be waived. Only one (1) presenter is allowed per entry.

  1. Photography contest is open to all senior High school students, college students, staff, and faculty of current MMHRDC member institutions.
  2. Plagiarism is grounds for automatic disqualification.
  3. All shortlisted entries shall become the property of the Metro Manila Health Research and Development Consortium
  4. The royalty of the photographer shall not apply everytime Metro Manila Health Research and Development Consortium should use the photos for promotion or management of MMHRDC.
  5. Photographer shall be given photo credits every time applicable.
  6. A maximum of two (2) entries per Lead Photographer.

  8. Official submissions grant MMHRDC the right to publish and distribute these photographs. Photographers will be asked to sign a Certificate of Originality and Consent to Publish and distribute these photographs without royalty fees.

  10. Shortlisted entries will be notified via email by April 12,2020.
  11. Shortlisted entries must submit 14x20 inches photoprint for judging on or before May 28,2020.
